What is a 4 Pipe System
If you’re having a Viessmann system boiler fitted with a hot water cylinder, the pipework layout matters more than most people think.
A 4 pipe system is how we connect selected Viessmann Vitodens system boilers to a compatible unvented cylinder. The boiler runs the heating and the cylinder itself, instead of relying on a traditional S-plan or Y-plan with extra valves, pumps and wiring.
That’s the setup we prefer on the right Viessmann jobs. It is cleaner to install, easier to control, and it is what lets weather compensation work properly on a system boiler.

What a 4 pipe system actually is

A 4 pipe install uses four connections:
- heating flow and return
- cylinder flow and return
The two circuits are separate. The boiler’s own diverter valve and controls send heat to the radiators or to the cylinder, depending on what the house needs.
In plain English: the boiler is in charge of both jobs, rather than a collection of additional valves outside the boiler.
Why this matters in a real house
The useful bit is not the extra pair of pipes. It is independent temperatures.
Hot water in a cylinder needs a high flow temperature to reheat properly. Radiators, especially with weather compensation, often run much cooler. If heating and hot water share the same two pipes, the boiler is stuck trying to do both jobs at once.
With a 4 pipe layout:
- the cylinder can take full boiler output when it needs a reheat
- the heating circuit can run at a lower, more efficient temperature
- hot water still takes priority, so you are not left with a lukewarm tank while the radiators are on
That last point is why this setup exists. On selected Vitodens system boilers, weather compensation is designed around a 4 pipe cylinder connection, not a traditional 2 pipe S-plan.
If you want the efficiency of cooler radiator water without wrecking hot water performance, this is how you do it.
4 pipe vs a traditional 2 pipe system
| Typical 2 pipe (S-plan / Y-plan) | 4 pipe | |
|---|---|---|
| Pipework |
Shared flow and return | Separate heating and cylinder circuits |
| Who controle the cylinder | External valves, stats and often an extra pump | The boiler, via its own controls and a cylinder sensor |
| Weather compensation | Possible, but usually a compromise | Designed to work with independent heating and hot water temperatures |
| Extra kit | Zone valves, cylinder thermostat, often an energy cut-off valve | Often fewer external parts, if the boiler and cylinder are a matched setup |
A 2 pipe system is not “wrong”. Plenty of homes still have one, and it can be the right answer if the cylinder or layout will not support 4 pipe. We just will not pretend it is the same job.
What you may not need on the install
On a correctly specified Viessmann 4 pipe system, the boiler can take on work that used to sit in a box of extras on the wall.
Depending on the boiler model and cylinder, that can mean leaving out:
- a separate energy cut-off valve
- an extra cylinder overheat thermostat
- a separate cylinder safety control pack
- an additional pump just for the hot water circuit
- some of the extra wiring that comes with a conventional S-plan / Y-plan
Fewer parts is not a shortcut. It is the boiler doing the job it was designed to do.
When we will specify a 4 pipe system
This is not a universal layout. We only use it where the whole system is suitable:
- a compatible Viessmann Vitodens system boiler
- a compatible unvented cylinder
- the correct Viessmann cylinder temperature sensor
- a design that matches current Viessmann installation instructions
We commonly look at this on Vitodens 100-W and 200-W system boilers. The exact combination still has to be right. Cylinder coil output matters too: if the coil is too small, the tank takes too long to reheat.
If your current cylinder is the wrong type, undersized, or cannot take the Viessmann sensor, we will say so. Sometimes the better job is a new cylinder as well as the boiler. Sometimes we stay on a 2 pipe arrangement. We would rather tell you that up front than force a setup that will not perform.
Building Regulations, G3 and who is responsible
Unvented hot water is not DIY territory. The cylinder side of the job has to meet current Building Regulations, including G3 where it applies, and it has to be installed by someone qualified to do that work.
Viessmann system boilers have control and safety functions built in. On an approved 4 pipe configuration, that can simplify how the system meets the rules. It does not remove the rules.
At Boilerhut, specification, installation, commissioning and compliance sit with us. That is the point of using a Viessmann Premium Partner rather than copying a manufacturer diagram and hoping the existing pipework cooperates.
How a Boilerhut 4 pipe install works
- You get an online quote, then we check the property, the existing cylinder and the heating layout.
- We confirm whether a 4 pipe Vitodens setup is suitable, or whether the cylinder needs replacing too.
- Our Gas Safe engineers fit the boiler, connect the heating and cylinder circuits, and fit the correct cylinder sensor.
- We commission the controls, including weather compensation where specified, and leave the system set up to be used as designed.
Hot water has priority. In practice, that means we set the system so the cylinder reheats at the right times, rather than leaving you guessing why the heating paused for 20 minutes.
