Back Boiler Replacement St Albans

Project details:

Decommissioning and removal of existing back boiler, hot water cylinder and cold water tanks, and replacement with a combi boiler.

Customer Requirements

In May 2021, we were approached by homeowners in St Albans who were looking to replace their 30-year old Baxi Bermuda back boiler with a more efficient and reliable heating system.

Back boilers are known for their long service life and this project perfectly highlights this – in 35 years of living in the property, the homeowners had only ever had two boilers. The current boiler was purchased by themselves around 30 years ago and had provided them with reliable heat and hot water for many years. The issue with this boiler though was its efficiency and reliability. Whilst it had been reliable for many years, over the past few years it had broken down on a number of occasions and due to lack of parts, repairing it was only getting more expensive.

Rather than repairing their decades-old back boiler, the customer sought an alternative heating system to provide the heating and hot water to their 3-bedroom semi-detached home.

Our Solution

Upon contacting Boilerhut, we immediately suggested replacing the back boiler with a combi boiler. After discussion with the customer, it was decided that the existing back boiler would not only be decommissioned but also removed. The removal of this meant the fire and fireplace surround would also need to be removed, and the customer would be left with a hole in the wall where these components were located. The customer was in agreement with this and had scheduled for this to be filled and plastered at a later date.

In addition to the removal of the back boiler and the fireplace, the installation of a combi boiler also meant that the hot water cylinder in a cupboard in the dining room was no longer needed, nor were the cold water tanks in the attic. With space freed up in the attic, it was agreed that the new combi boiler would be installed in this location and the homeowners would have new storage space in their dining room.

To this project, we installed the following:

1 x Viessmann Vitodens 050-W BPJD 29kW combi gas boiler
1 x Viessmann horizontal flue
7 x thermostatic radiator valves
1 x Spirotech SpiroTrap magnetic filter
1 x condensate pump
1 x EPH Combipack4 programmable thermostat
22mm gas upgrade
Chemical flush of the system

Installation Details

Taking place over three days, this project involved one of our installers draining the existing back boiler system, decommissioning it and removing it from its installation location behind the client’s fireplace in their living room. Along with the boiler, the fire and fireplace surround was removed too. The hot water cylinder and cold water attic tanks were then also removed.

With the existing heating system components removed, we then upgraded the gas supply pipework, running this under the floorboards upstairs and into the loft where the new boiler was installed.

Customer Feedback

I read quite a bit about Boilerhut regarding Combi boilers before contacting the company. I spoke to Paul Hughes, he was remarkably helpful. After submitting requested pictures of my Baxi Bermuda back boiler system which was conventional, Paul explained it was a straightforward job replacing the system with a Viessmann Combi Boiler, and it would take 2 to 3 days to complete the job by one of his excellent Registered engineers the Company employs, I was amazed it was just that. The engineer was friendly, polite and outstanding. I certainly would recommend Boilerhut if anyone needs their boiler replaced. A big thank you to Paul and Matteo the brilliant engineer.
