So, what do you need to know about free boiler grants in 2018?  In this article we’ll do our best to explain the ins and outs of, and who can qualify for Free Boiler Grants 2018.  Read on and find out more.

First of All, Who is Giving Away Money?

Let’s go back to basics. Despite Brexit, the Government still has to comply with the EU requirements to reduce carbon emissions, and that means that some serious action needs to be taken in England and Wales.  One of the biggest problems is that a large proportion of the UK’s housing stock has very poor energy efficiency levels, and this means that every time householders need to turn their heating on (which is, unfortunately, quite regularly with the poor British weather), excessive amounts of carbon is being released into the atmosphere.  In an attempt to bring the UK’s carbon emissions down, the UK Government put a scheme in place called the ECO or Energy Company Obligation back in 2013.  The ECO Scheme was designed to help both private tenants and homeowners on low incomes to get rid of their inefficient old boilers and to get a brand new energy efficient one, either completely free or at a huge discount.

The government is working in conjunction with the UK’s main energy providers on the ECO Scheme, and in fact they have legally obliged these big energy companies to do their bit towards improving household energy efficiency nationwide by giving Free Boiler Grants 2018 to individuals who are considered to be most vulnerable.  All of the biggest name providers of energy are involved in the scheme, such as EDF Energy, British Gas, nPower, Eon, OVO, SSE and Scottish Power.  That means that if you have an energy account with any of these suppliers, they have an obligation to tell you if you could be eligible to receive funding for a free replacement boiler.  Even if you don’t currently use one of the suppliers involved with the scheme, you can still qualify to receive the grant and get help from any of these providers to replace your boiler under the Energy Company Obligation Scheme.

How do you Qualify for Free Boiler Grants 2018?

On the downside, not every household in the UK can benefit from the free boiler grants 2018, even if their boiler isn’t energy efficient.  There is a stringent list of criteria that has to be met in order for a household to be eligible to receive any money.  So, let’s look and see who can benefit from the scheme.

  • Are you a pensioner?  If you’re a pensioner AND you’re receiving Pension Credit or Pension Guarantee Credit or both savings credit and guarantee credit, you are eligible for free boiler grants 2018.  Unfortunately, if you are a pensioner but you aren’t receiving benefits from the government, you won’t be able to take advantage of the scheme, although there could be other local schemes near you that you could benefit from.
  • Are you unemployed?  If you receive income support, income based job seekers allowance or income related employment and support allowance, you automatically qualify for the scheme under the new rules.
  • Are you in receipt of Working Tax Credit?  You may be able to make a claim depending on the makeup of your household.  The amount of tax credits you receive and the number of people in your property will determine whether you are eligible.  For example, if you are the only adult in your home, you are eligible if your income is under £13,200 per year, but if you are a 2 adult household with four or more children, you can have an income of £36,600 and still be eligible.
  • Are you in receipt of Child Tax Credit?  Again, just like Working Tax Credit, the thresholds for eligibility will vary depending on the number of adults and children in the property and the amount of household income coming in per year.
  • Do you get Universal Credit?  If you receive Universal Credit, your threshold for eligibility will vary depending on the makeup of your household.  For a single adult household, your net earned monthly income can be as high as £1,100 for you to be eligible.  On the other hand, if you are in a 2 adult household with four or more children, you can earn up to £3050 per month and be eligible for the grant.

Are There Any Other Eligibility Criteria?

Unfortunately, even if you are on qualifying benefits and meet the financial requirements, there are other requirements to bear in mind too.

  • Is your boiler over 8 years, a non-condensing boiler AND below 85.9% efficiency?  Then you are eligible for the scheme.
  • Is your boiler under 8 years old but has been deemed by a professional to be non energy-efficient and unable to be rectified at a cost effective price?  Then you are eligible for the scheme.
  • Do you own your own home and meet all the other criteria? Then you are eligible.
  • Do you rent from a private landlord AND have permission for the installation? Then again, you meet the eligibility criteria.
  • Do you have a gas, LPG or oil boiler?  Then if you meet all the other criteria, you are eligible.
  • Do you have an A or B rated boiler, which is above 85.9% efficiency, but is beyond economical repair?  Then you could be eligible.

Although there are quite a lot of eligibility criteria, it is well worth discovering if you qualify, so that you can take advantage of this Free Boiler Grants 2018.  Even if you don’t qualify for a completely free boiler, the grant still covers a sizeable portion of the total cost for a new boiler installation.

Why You Shouldn’t Buy the Cheapest Boiler

If you do qualify for free boiler grants 2018the company who fits the boiler for you, does not have to install a premium boiler.  Also, they don’t have to give you warranties of more than 3 years.  Which means that energy companies and other boiler installation companies can actually give you a boiler cheap enough to be covered as “free” under the grant, and enough warranty to fulfill the terms.  Now, boilers are not an investment that is made for 3 or 5 years.  When you buy a boiler, you want it to last for at least 10-15 years.

So, 3 years after you get your boiler fitted under the grant, if you experience a boiler breakdown during the winter months, you’re on your own.  The boiler is out of warranty, so the manufacturer won’t cover it.  You will have to find a local plumber or pay a company to service the boiler for you.  So, if you qualify, and the grant covers about £1,200 of the cost, and the installation company tells you your boiler is free, be VERY aware.  We suggest you do your own research on the internet on the boiler make and model before committing to anything.

What’s more, while a lot of other energy companies and boiler installation companies have been known to take weeks to months to process your free boiler grant 2018, Boilerhut can get everything done in a week.  That includes processing your application, doing the survey, and installing the boiler.  Don’t believe us, read this customer review for yourself:
