Grant UK Air Source Heat Pumps

Grant UK – Air Source Heat Pumps

The Aerona air-to-water heat pumps are a sustainable heating solution. Combining exceptional performance, reliability and value, a Grant heat pump is a renewable energy heat source which can significantly reduce a home’s carbon footprint.

Renewable heating solution

Air source heat pumps are playing a major role in helping the country to achieve net zero carbon emission targets. Air-to-water heat pumps capture heat energy from the air and transfer this into ‘wet’ heating systems, such as radiators or underfloor heating. Visit our Knowledge Hub to learn more about how an air source heat pump works.

Design & installation

Air source heat pumps are low temperature heating systems which means they operate differently to traditional fossil fuel boilers which are high temperature systems. It is therefore incredibly important that when installing a heat pump, the system is planned thoroughly to ensure that it can fulfil the heating requirements of the property. Read more about how to find the right heat pump for your home here.

To help an air source heat pump to perform at its optimal efficiencies, it is important that the heat pump system is correctly designed, appropriately sized heat emitters are specified, the home is adequately insulated to reduce heat loss and a comprehensive customer handover takes place with the installer so that homeowners understand how their highly efficient, low carbon heat pump heating system will work.

Why choose a Grant Aerona air source heat pump?

With outputs of 6kW, 10kW, 13kW and 17kW, the Aerona³ R32 heat pumps are designed to maintain a reliable and consistent heat output, even at low outdoor air temperatures. Meanwhile, the Aerona 290 heat pumps incorporate the natural refrigerant, R290, which is very energy efficient and even more environmentally friendly. What’s more, these efficient units have an impressive ErP rating of A+++ across the range. Aerona heat pumps are also simple to maintain.

What are the disadvantages of an air source heat pump?

As a summary, the main disadvantages are:

  • Expensive to run – Electricity is (at the time of writing this) 2-4 times the price of gas. This means that although air source heat pumps are 350-400% efficient, you’re spending 3-4 times more on energy.
  • Installation cost – Air source heat pumps are expensive to install, especially if you need to upgrade your property’s insulation, radiators and pipework as well.
  • Not suitable for all – Many properties will not be suitable for an air source heat pump. You need to run the system at much lower radiator temperatures meaning larger radiators and thicker pipework around the home.
  • Not all electricity is green – Over the past 12 months approximately 36% of energy has come from fossil fuels (this is a great site that shows live usage and usage over time).

Air Source Heat Pump Installation Costs

On average a new air source heat pump installation will cost you £10,000 – £20,000 depending on the amount of work that would need to be done to upgrade your home.

The cost to install air source heat pumps will vary depending on the make and model of the system, location of the install, and the type of system it’s replacing.

Is an air source heat pump suitable for my house?

Unlike gas, LPG or oil boilers air source heat pumps are not suitable for all properties. For example, if the installation isn’t correct then the grant isn’t eligible and it could cost a lot to run and install.

If your property has good insulation and a heat-loss survey confirms it your home could be a perfect candidate for the upgrade scheme.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, in the right property. They work very well and although expensive will last a long time and remove reliance on fossil fuels.

When installed correctly and following the MCS guidelines (see our air source heat pump regulations guide for more information >) your home will be heavily insulated and the heating system will not have to work too hard, no matter the weather. If you upgraded your home as part of the heat pump installation you will save money due to reduced heat loss in the home and lower requirements on the heat pump.

If your home is already heavily insulated, your energy bills may initially be higher with a heat pump compared to a gas boiler because electricity costs more than gas. However, the long-term savings are significant. Air source heat pumps typically last for at least 20 years, whereas gas boilers typically need replacing after 10-15 years.

This extended lifespan, coupled with the efficiency of heat pumps, leads to lower overall costs over the lifetime of the system.

A few disadvantages:

  • It’s visible outside the property.
  • They’re quiet, but not 100% silent.
  • Needs a very well-insulated property.
  • High initial installation costs.

If you have chosen an air source heat pump to heat your property and water you will see an increase in electricity usage. But it also means that if you were heating your home before, gas, LPG, oil etc will now cost you nothing.

In order to keep air source heat pumps efficient you will need to keep the radiator/heating water temperatures low, at around 40 degrees C. If the system needs to work harder than that, maybe you’ve underpowered the instal or turned up the flow temperatures, the heat pump will need to work much harder – using a lot more electricity.

Air source heat pumps generally produce between 40 and 70 decibels, which falls within the range of low to average noise levels. This is comparable to the noise generated by a dishwasher or microwave. Current building regulations stipulate that an air source heat pump must not exceed 45 decibels when one meter away from a neighbour’s window.

Considering factors like efficiency, energy consumption, and coefficient of performance (COP), an air-source heat pump can present a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for home heating compared to gas or oil boilers. But, this only takes into account the air source heat pump installation, it won’t take into account upgrading your home (insulation, radiators, pipework) if this needs doing.

Yes, heat pumps excel in efficiency when operating at lower temperatures, aligning perfectly with underfloor heating systems, which require relatively low flow temperatures compared to radiators.

Yes, if the model allows for the switch after installation. Most Viessmann air source heat pumps have cooling built in.

You will require an outdoor space adjacent to your home where a unit can be mounted on a wall or positioned on the ground. It’s important to ensure there is ample space surrounding it to facilitate proper air circulation.

This is a big question. We specialise in Viessmann and sometimes the Alpha Hybrid systems. Viessmann produces a premium, high-quality product.

The price for an air source heat pump typically varies between £10,000 and £20,000. This is a big range, we understand. In order to get you a good and accurate quote please fill out our quote form and we’ll contact you back.

Air source heat pumps function by absorbing external air, which is then compressed and passed through a coil. This coil elevates the temperature of the air, which is subsequently circulated throughout your house to provide heating.
