Our thoughts on the current Worcester Bosch boiler range

Our engineers with over 40 years of experience have reviewed the current Worcester Bosch boiler range and have the identified following positives and negatives:

Positives

Excellent build quality

Worcester Bosch boilers have some of the best build quality of any boiler range currently available in the UK.

Backed up by the engineering strength of the Bosch brand, Worcester Bosch has long been known for its build quality and this continues across the 2021 range

Easy to fit

The investment in engineering from Bosch pays off, as this makes them very easy to install for the heating engineer. This is of benefit to the customer as it keeps installation costs down

Easy to service

In addition to being easy to install, they are also easy to service too. From a simple flap on the front of the boilers in the range, heating engineers have access to what they need quickly and efficiently

Good technical support

Worcester Bosch is renowned for having great customer service and technical support when things go wrong

Great guarantee

Worcester Bosch’s guarantee is comprehensive and covers replacement parts, call out and labour costs.

Simple control panel on most models

The control panel on most models in the range is clearly presented and laid out simply to allow for easier and quicker diagnostic checks, without an engineer needing to be present. Should an issue arise, they can talk you through the necessary checks before determining whether a call-out is necessary or not

Additional controls

Worcester Bosch offers great control over the boilers in its range by utilising smart thermostats. Whether you choose to use Worcester Bosch’s own Wave smart internet-connected programmable control or a smart control such as a Nest, you will be provided with greater control over your energy consumption and programming of your heating schedule

Size

On the whole, the boilers in the Worcester Bosch range are of compact size and are mostly designed to be able to be housed in locations such as an airing cupboard, utility room or garage. Whilst combi boilers such as the Greenstar CDi Compact features dimensions of 690mm x 390mm x 280mm, which make it compact enough to be able to fit into a standard kitchen cupboard

Boilers in the range feature manual override switches

Should the thermostat fail, this will prove to be a saviour on cold winter nights

Low risk of the condensate pipe freezing in severe weather conditions

Though a simple fix, a frozen condensate pipe can be frustrating and lead to temporary heating and hot water outage. Thankfully though, the Worcester Bosch range features condensate pipes that are resistant to freezing.

Compatible with a wide range of controls

Allowing for increased energy efficiency and smarter operation, the Worcester Bosch range is compatible with a wide range of thermostats and smart heating controls

Integrated low energy pumps

An integrated low energy pump in boilers across the range will enable you to reduce your electricity usage

Included frost protection

This will reduce frost risk if installed in a garage or a loft

Energy efficiency

One of the reasons why the Worcester Bosch line of boilers is so popular, in particular, the Greenstar boiler range, is because they are highly efficient when it comes to energy usage and conservation.

For example, the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 25i has 94% ErP efficiency, making it an A-rated boiler. This means that it is not just a powerful and high-performance boiler, it will also save you money and help to reduce your carbon footprint.

Negatives

Aluminium heat exchanger

Our biggest complaint about the current Worcester Bosch range is the company’s use of aluminium heat exchangers, compared to competitors using stainless steel heat exchangers in boilers at a similar price point.

We feel the aluminium heat exchanger used in many of the Worcester Bosch boilers is a negative due to not being as resistant to corrosion as a stainless steel heat exchanger is. Aluminium is prone to rust and corrosion over time from magnetite sludge and other chemicals, with this being increased if flow rates are higher.

A quick search online will highlight the problems that plumbers and consumers have highlighted with aluminium heat exchangers, common complaints include the heating waterway becoming clogged up with black oxide sludge and debris. Whilst periodical power flushes or chemical flushes can help alleviate these problems, aluminium still is more prone to corrosion than stainless steel.

As a heat exchanger is at the heart of every boiler, tolerating extreme mechanical stresses inside an environment similar to a furnace, quality matters

Ultimately, this means that the boiler’s efficiency will decrease at a much faster rate. This means that the efficiency stated above will not last for the lifetime of the boiler.

Worcester Bosch is an expensive brand

Whether it is for the initial outlay of buying the boiler, buying parts in the future or having to choose a bespoke flue option, Worcester Bosch is expensive. In some ways, you get what you pay for and that’s a renowned brand with an excellent reputation in the UK, however, in other ways you are paying a premium for a brand that has competitors offering better quality components at the same or a cheaper price point

Boilers in the range utilise plastic parts

As alluded to above, the components in the current Worcester Bosch range aren’t of the highest quality when compared to the competition. Whilst other manufacturers choose to utilise brass components, to keep costs down Worcester Bosch utilise plastic or rubber alternatives which will perish over time

Harder to service

Due to the configuration of the components and being difficult to access, Worcester Bosch boilers are harder to service than the competitor boiler brands. Whilst this isn’t an issue for the customer whilst the boiler is in warranty, once the warranty has ended this result in increased labour costs

Extra warranties are available if you use Worcester Bosch’s own brand controls and magnetic filter

However, despite this, you will find you will get better value by choosing controls and magnetic filters from other manufacturers

Our verdict on the current Worcester Bosch range

At Boilerhut, we are not surprised at the popularity of Worcester Bosch boilers. They are high-quality boilers with solid build quality and high efficiency. However, by continuing to utilise plastic components and aluminium heat exchangers across many of their boilers, they are not the best boiler brand when it comes to value for money and retained efficiency of the appliance. Whilst these products are backed up by a comprehensive warranty, the warranty period differs from boiler to boiler, and this is as little as 6 years on models such as the Greenstar 2000, even when installed by a Worcester Bosch Accredited Installer. This means that should any problems occur outside of the warranty period, you will be liable for the costs of parts and labour. It should be noted that a heat exchanger can cost around £500 just to buy the part alone.
