Renowned for its use of innovative technology, Viessmann develops all of its products with sustainability in mind. Viessmann boiler review – the pros and cons

Viessmann boilers offer a range of advantages, but they also have some drawbacks like all other brands. We think that you should be aware of all the details before making a purchase.

Viessmann advantages

Long lifespan: Viessmann boilers are built with high-quality components that contribute to their extended lifespan. This is further enhanced by the incorporation of quality parts like the Inox-Radial stainless steel heat exchanger, which promotes long-term efficiency.

Quiet operation: Viessmann boilers are quiet, ensuring a peaceful home environment.

High efficiency: Viessmann boilers are among the most efficient on the market, with many models operating at 98% efficiency. This translates into significant energy savings and lower heating costs.

Weather compensation: Viessmann boilers incorporate a range of smart heating features, including weather compensation. This system compares the outdoor temperature to the thermostat settings and adjusts the boiler’s operation accordingly, ensuring optimal heating efficiency and comfort.

Extended 10 or 12-year warranty: While a standard 5-year warranty is provided, Boilerhut can extend it to 10 years (on the 050 and 200 models) and 12 years (on the 100-W model) as we’re a Viessmann premium installer. This extended warranty provides peace of mind, knowing that your home heating system will receive the necessary care. As long as the manufacturer service plan is followed, the Viessmann boiler warranty covers individual parts within the boiler, such as the signature stainless steel heat exchanger.

Viessmann disadvantages

Higher cost: Viessmann boilers can be more expensive than some competitors, such as Baxi and Vaillant. However, if you get a quote with Boilerhut you may be surprised. Often a premium Viessmann boiler and installation will be cheaper than our competitors.

Occasional system errors: Like other brands, Viessmann boilers are not immune to occasional errors and faults. The system does show error codes to assist in troubleshooting or informing your boiler engineer.

Overall, Viessmann boilers offer a combination of durability, efficiency, and innovative features that make them a compelling choice for homeowners seeking a high-performance heating system. However, it is worth noting that in a few circumstances they can be slightly more expensive than other brands.

We would always suggest getting a quick and free quote online for an idea of the price and then speaking to one of our engineers to ensure the quote is correct. Often there are little things that may change the price. You must also consider that Viessmann are a premium brand designed to maintain efficiency over it’s lifespan saving you money on your gas bills.

Frequently asked questions about Viessmann

Viessmann offers a comprehensive range of combi boilers, storage combi boilers, system boilers and conventional boilers for domestic use. Viessmann’s domestic boiler range is available in gas and oil fuel types.

We are often asked by customers just how good Viessmann boilers are, our answer to this is that they are excellent.

Viessmann offers the most technologically advanced and efficient boilers currently available on the UK market. Our opinion of Viessmann boilers is based on the technology employed across the range, the efficiency of its boilers, the flow rates offered by Viessmann combi boilers, and the company’s usage of components that are all manufactured in-house at its Allendorf production facility.

Key to the excellent quality of Viessmann boilers is the usage of its patented Inox-Radial stainless steel heat exchanger. Constructed from the highest grade of stainless steel, Viessmann’s heat exchangers are highly resistant to corrosion, don’t require special fluids as aluminium heat exchangers do, and are designed to retain the boiler’s efficiency for the lifetime of the appliance.

Our opinion of Viessmann is backed up by Which?, with the consumer organisation awarding the Vitodens domestic boiler range Which? Best Buy status every year since 2017. To determine Best Buy status, Which? surveys over 8,458 consumers about the boiler brand they own and whether they would recommend it to a friend. Which? also surveys over 170 registered Trusted Traders heating engineers on their thoughts about the boiler brands they work with and their thoughts about installation, services, fault fixing, and the availability of parts and spares.

Upon being awarded Best Buy status for the first time in 2017, Which? said the following about Viessmann, “Viessmann has been on the cusp of being a Best Buy boiler brand for the past few years, and 2017 sees it deservedly crack it. Its reliability score is the best of any brand” and “Two-thirds of owners would definitely recommend their Viessmann boiler to a friend. Engineers are positive about Viessmann too.”

Viessmann has now been awarded Which? Best Buy status multiple times and was described as a “very smart choice” by the consumer organisation in its latest survey.

Both our opinion and the opinion of Which? is reflected by Viessmann UK being rated excellent by Trustpilot, with a TrustScore of 4.6 on the review platform.

Viessmann has 22 production facilities in 12 countries across the world. However, all of the Viessmann boilers available in the UK are manufactured at Viessmann’s global head offices and production facilities in Allendorf (Eder) in Hesse, Germany.

Yes, Viessmann’s UK office has been based in Telford, Shropshire since 1989. From this office, Viessmann coordinate the training of approximately 2,500 installers, contractors, specifiers and architects on its products each year across the UK.

Yes, all Viessmann spare parts are stocked at Plumbase and several other plumbing merchant locations around the UK.

The Viessmann boiler that is right for you is dependent on several factors. These include the following:

  • The size of your property
  • The hot water demands of your household
  • Your current boiler system
  • Whether your home is connected to the mains gas network

To illustrate the most suitable boiler for your needs, we have detailed a number of typical scenarios and the most suitable boiler for these below:

One bedroom flat with one bathroom and an existing combi boiler
Suggested boiler: Viessmann Vitodens 050-W 29kW
Three bedroom semi-detached house with one bathroom, eight radiators, and an existing combi boiler
Suggested boiler: Viessmann Vitodens 100-W 30kW combi boiler
Three bedroom terrace house with two bathrooms, ten radiators, and an existing combi boiler
Suggested boiler: Viessmann Vitodens 100-W 32kW combi boiler

We think so, yes.

Worcester Bosch are a fantastic brand, and we do sometimes install their boilers into people’s homes if they really want one, or a particular model is a better fit for their needs. However, we find that in most cases a Viessmann model would do the job more efficiently for a longer period of time due to the stainless steel heat exchanger.

  • Viessmann boilers are just built to last with patented parts and premium materials rather than composites.
  • Viessmann are a Which! Best Buy, like Worcester Bosch.
  • Full industry-leading 10-12 year warranty.
  • Parts are fully available in the UK through Plumbase and other merchants.

As a Premium Partner of Viessmann, Boilerhut is able to offer the full 12 year warranty on the Vitodens 100-W range and 10 years on the 050 and 200 ranges.

We think so, yes. Both brands offer A-rated boilers but Viessmann are the more premium brand.

  • Viessmann are an industry-leading company when it comes to energy efficiency with their 200-range being 98% efficient.
  • Boilerhut and Viessmann offer up to 12 year warranties on the 100-W range and up to 10 years on their 050 and 200 ranges.
  • Viessmann boilers use a patented and superior stainless steel heat exchanger which increases reliability and efficiency over 10-12 years.
  • Most models are about the same size, if not smaller than Vaillant boilers.
  • All that, and in general, Viessmann are cheaper or the same price for similar capacity and power models.

It all depends on the model, capacity and power of the boiler. Models start at around £1,300 and can go up to £4,000 for the top of the range storage combi boilers (read about storage combi boilers here >).

Gas & LPG Combi Boilers – A popular choice in many homes, combi boilers provide both heating and hot water from one unit without the need for a separate water tank. Viessmann’s combi boilers are known for their compact size, efficiency, and convenience.

System Boilers – These boilers work with a separate cylinder for storing hot water. They are suitable for homes with higher hot water demand. Viessmann’s system boilers are known for their reliability and efficiency.

Regular/Conventional Boilers – Also known as traditional or heat-only boilers, these are typically used in older heating systems and are ideal for homes that already have a traditional heating and hot water system linked to a separate hot water cylinder.

Air Source Heat Pump – Air source heat pumps serve as a great alternative to conventional gas or oil heating systems, as they enable you to generate heat with electricity and could help you to reduce both your energy bills and your carbon footprint.
